20 Business Resolutions for 2016

It’s that time of year again—new year, new start! Many of us make personal resolutions, but what about for our businesses? Of course, we set goals and targets, but what about all the smaller improvements that could make a big difference? I’ve decided to combine New Year Resolutions with Business Goals and create some Business Resolutions for 2016. If you’re struggling to think of your own, here are 20 suggestions to get you started. What would you add?

20 Business Resolutions for 2016

1. Be On Time.

In today’s busy world, it’s tempting to try to squeeze in one more task before an appointment. But punctuality is highly valued and being late adds unnecessary stress. If you’re habitually late, make this the year you prioritise punctuality!

2. Social Media Marketing Consistently.

The key word here is consistently. If you’ve been dabbling, challenge yourself to work on your social media marketing for just 20 minutes each workday.

3. Keep Admin Up to Date.

It’s easy to push aside small admin tasks, thinking they’ll only take a minute. But delaying them can turn those small tasks into a massive burden later. Staying on top of them as you go can save you from an overwhelming admin day! If admin isn’t your strength, consider outsourcing to a virtual PA.

4. Declutter the Office.

They say, “tidy desk, tidy mind,” and while that might be debatable, a clean and organised office certainly helps productivity and prevents distractions. Now, where did I put the blue tack?

5. Organise Yourself with an Online Diary.

Online diaries help you stay organised, and with the app on your phone, you can check or update your schedule wherever you are. Combine this with resolution #1, and you’re really making progress!

6. Know Your Financial Status at All Times.

Regularly analyse your profit and loss so you can respond to changes in your business. Software like Xero makes it easy to check your financial situation with a few clicks, improving budgeting, sales goals and even making your accountant’s life easier.

7. Invest in Yourself.

Make time to develop your skills or knowledge this year. Whether it’s presentation skills, networking or learning to use Xero to master resolution #6, there’s always something new to learn.

8. Dedicate Time to Team Bonding.

Organise a team lunch, social event or team-building activity. Your people are the backbone of your business and fostering a strong team dynamic is worth the investment.

9. Set a Goal to Grow Your Business.

Whether it’s gaining new clients, upselling to existing ones or adding a new revenue stream, growth is essential. What’s your plan for business expansion this year?

10. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone.

It’s easy to stick with what you know, but growth comes from stretching yourself. Whether it’s trying a new marketing approach, working with a different supplier or writing that weekly blog, step outside your comfort zone this year.

11. Review Your Customer Journey.

Examine every step of the process your customers experience when interacting with your business. Is it seamless? Are there areas that could be improved? Ensuring a great customer experience leads to repeat business—and happy customers are your best advocates.

12. Meet New People.

Join a new networking group or business club. Meeting new people brings fresh perspectives and ideas that can benefit your business in ways you may not have anticipated.

13. Give Recognition.

It’s easy to focus on the negatives. Take time to recognise your own achievements and those of your team. A little reward goes a long way and everyone—including the boss—needs to feel appreciated.

14. Create a Business Continuity Plan.

No one likes to think about worst-case scenarios, but as a business owner, you can’t afford to ignore them. What will you do if the office burns down or your internet is down for days? Prepare for potential disasters now and you’ll be ready if and when they occur.

15. Review Your Time Management.

Where are you losing time in your day? Keep track for a week and identify areas for improvement. Time management not your strong suit? Then make it a priority to work on it—this is a skill worth mastering!

16. Take Time to Enjoy Your Business.

Remember why you started your business in the first place. Take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come and enjoy the journey, not just the destination.

17. Avoid Overwhelm.

If your to-do list feels never-ending, don’t panic. Focus on just three tasks a day. Once you’ve completed them, move on to the next three. This approach can help reduce stress and make your workload more manageable.

18. Brainstorm with Your Team.

Your team is a valuable resource—don’t forget to utilise their collective wisdom! Regular brainstorming sessions can spark new ideas and help you tackle challenges from different perspectives.

19. Review Your Spending.

Are you still getting value for the money you’re spending? Whether it’s a membership, office supplies or an outsourced partner, review your expenses regularly to ensure you’re still getting the best deal.

20. Add Value to Your Proposition.

Highlight what sets your business apart from competitors. Do you offer expert knowledge, superior customer service or a great returns policy? Let your customers know why they should choose you.

What will your business resolutions be for 2016?
