Making the Most of Your Networking Activities
One of the best ways to grow your business is through networking with like-minded people. Across the country, there are countless networking clubs and groups, but with so many options, choosing the right one(s) can be tricky. In fact, if you wanted to, it’s possible to spend all your time at networking meetings and never get any work done! My advice is to attend a few as a guest first (most groups are happy for you to do this) and then join the ones that best suit your needs.
So, what exactly is networking? It can be defined as: ‘The interaction with other people to exchange information and develop professional or personal contacts.’
Making the Most of Your Networking Activities
To gain the most from attending business networking events, it’s important to follow a simple formula:
- Hone your elevator pitch. You’ll usually have about a minute to explain what your company does, so make sure your unique selling points (USPs) are clear and describe the types of businesses you’re looking to be introduced to. Present this in a relaxed, natural manner—avoid reading from a script.
- Bring plenty of business cards. There will be ample opportunity to hand out your cards and collect those of others at the event.
- Book follow-up meetings. Don’t just focus on those who could become customers, but also connect with people who could be valuable referral partners.
- Follow up after the event. Send a polite email to your new contacts, letting them know it was a pleasure to meet them. Offer the chance to meet for a ‘one-to-one’ discussion.
- Connect on social media. Invite your new contacts to follow your business on LinkedIn, Twitter or like your Facebook page.
- Attend regularly. Networking is all about building relationships. By attending regularly, you’re more likely to turn new contacts into long-term business connections.
Making the Most of Your Networking Opportunities
If you are invited to present your business at a networking event, don’t pass up the opportunity. It’s your chance to showcase your company and establish yourself as an expert in your field.
Remember, not everyone you meet at these events will be a potential customer, but anyone could know someone who would benefit from your services. They may be happy to recommend or refer you. And, of course, you might also be able to refer some business their way! Networking is a two-way street, building trust and fostering relationships can lead to mutual success.
